It was built in 1841 and named after James Prinsep, the Anglo-Indian scholar and antiquary. The monument rich in Greek and Gothic inlays, was restored by the state's public works department in November 2001 and has since been well-maintained. In its initial years, all the royal British entourages used the Prinsep Ghat jetty for embarkation/disembarkation.

Six local high school students from Rye Country Day School are working at the Jay Heritage Center through this week for their Senior term community service project. Their projects include organizing archaeological artifacts previously found at the site for use and demonstration to JHC summer campers. They have also started a new archaeology dig of their own at the site supervised by Dr. Eugene Boesch.
It is really terrific to see their enthusiasm and see the difference that a group effort like theirs can make. This is the 2nd year that students have participated in this week long examination of the cultural resources and manmade imprints on the land from Paleo-Indian times to the present.
Part of the day included a tour of the ruins of the Hayes house destroyed in the infamous New England Hurricane of 1938. This is what's left of the dock.
JHC will be holding 2 summer archaeology camps this July - one for kids and one for teens - please call Program Director Heather Craane at (914) 698-9275 for more information on how to enroll your child. Space is limited to 12 students per camp session.

OK, enough of the showing off, and back to photos with a few pictures of the sea pinks on the cliffs above freshwater bay. This one was taken with the canon 100m f2.8 macro. I'd headed out that day hoping for some lovely sunny shots of the whole place in bloom, but when i got there it was shrouded in sea mist with a weird (but lovely) diffused light. And here's the results, it was like being in a giant softbox without any of the harsh shadows that would have been there
in direct sunlight.
Pox update = not great, sleep is hard to come by as i want to rip my skin off, but i'm telling myself this isn't as bad as last time and hopefully i'm on the mend already.

slow giving ~ Daniel Lanois
Slow giving, slow coming
Slow giving, slow coming
Joy giving, joy coming
Love giving, love coming
Angel, I've seen you in the rocket speed
I've seen you in the ground that feeds
My angel, with me you've crawled through the trenches
Forever scaling my defenses
I need you now in my rebel mind
Please lock the door and hang a sign
My heart is open wide but the bleeding's hard to stop
Explain to me what is and what is not, what is, what is, what is
Slow giving, slow coming
Slow giving, slow coming
Joy giving, joy coming
Love giving, love coming
Angel, until the beast in me forever burns
It's hard to know which way to turn
On the guard rail of your 25 years
I feel the piercing ember of every tear
On a desert plane, on my knees, broken and ragged saying please baby please baby please
Oh angel I've lost so many times
Please, please show me a sign
On a pretty lip
On a broken grip, don't let me bring the roof down
Let me build my spirit sound
I'm standing right back where I started, please let me stay open hearted
Oh angel, my sweet angel, angel
